HISTORIC WINDOW & DOOR CO.
About Us
At Historic Window & Door Co., we believe windows and doors are more than just functional—they are the soul of a home. Our mission is to honor the enduring beauty of traditional craftsmanship while providing solutions that meet the needs of today’s homeowners, architects, and preservationists.
Our Story
Founded on a passion for preservation and fine woodworking, we have built our reputation by bringing timeless structures back to life. From century-old windows that need thoughtful restoration, to new custom-built doors designed with historical accuracy, we treat every project as a work of art.

Why Restoration Matters

Original windows and doors: particularly those built before the 1940s—were constructed with old-growth, straight-grained wood that is simply no longer available today. This dense, resin-rich material resists rot, expands and contracts less, and holds paint better. In most cases, it outperforms newer materials in both durability and aesthetic character.
Our restoration process is grounded in knowledge, care, and respect. Removing, stripping, and repairing historic windows without damaging sash joinery, original cylinder (“wavy”) glass, or casing requires more than just good intentions—it demands years of experience. No matter if we’re preserving antique glass or replicating lost moulding profiles, we approach each window as a one-of-a-kind heirloom.
As a state-certified lead-safe firm, we follow strict protocols when working on homes built before 1978. This ensures that our restoration process is safe for homeowners, workers, and their families.
There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to restoration. We assess each project individually to determine the best course of action—whether it’s re-roping and reglazing, replacing deteriorated rails, or milling a matching sash. Our goal is always to retain as much of the original fabric as possible while strengthening it for the next century.
What Makes Our New Builds Different

-
Solid Wood Construction: We use only solid wood for our windows. When we build doors that require engineered cores for stability, we never use finger-jointed softwood. Instead, we craft laminated cores, fully coated on all surfaces in marine epoxy, then apply thick, hand-cut veneers that can be refinished repeatedly without risk of sanding through.
-
Custom Craftsmanship, Not Mass Production: We operate as a custom shop. Every project receives individualized attention, with wood selected for the best color and grain match—particularly important for stain-grade work. Unlike factory-made windows, our builds are designed to harmonize with your home's original character.
-
Repairable, Maintainable, Built to Last: Our restorations and reproductions are built for longevity. Modern replacement windows are often sealed units with plastic parts and glued joints that fail within two decades. In contrast, our joinery techniques, durable materials, and attention to detail allow for straightforward maintenance, simple repairs, and a much longer lifespan.
-
A Team of Specialists: We have a larger, more specialized team than most shops. With diverse skillsets and backgrounds, we assign the right person to each phase of the work. This means faster turnaround times and unmatched quality—from historical research and milling to hand glazing and finishing.
-
Pragmatic Preservation: We love pure preservation, but we also understand the realities of modern living. We offer discrete weatherstripping, elastomeric glazing compounds, modern finishes, and even the option for insulated glass—all while maintaining the architectural integrity of the original design.
